Different Kinds of Metals: a Basic Overview of Metallurgy

Metallurgy is the study of metal. It encompasses the physical and chemical properties of metals found in nature. These natural metals are often called metallic elements. Common metals are gold, iron, copper, aluminum, and silver.

Gold

Gold is often used in jewelry making. It is a soft metal and this malleability makes it ideal for molding and etching jewelry designs.

Historically, gold was used as a monetary substitute and was often used as barter for obtaining goods and services, even in early civilization. It resists oxidation and corrosion more so than other popular metals, making it ideal for use in dentistry and the electronics industry.

Stainless Steel (Iron)

Stainless steel is made primarily from iron. Iron in its natural state rusts very quickly. Therefore, stainless steel is a treated alloy of iron that resists oxidation, making it more suitable for industrial and practical applications.

The durability and appearance of stainless steel make it a popular choice for counter tops and commercial grade equipment.

Copper

Copper is good conductor of heat and electricity and is often used in plumbing and electrical work because of its natural abilities. When copper oxidizes, it creates an affect called patina.

This gives the normally golden metal a green tint. This quality makes copper ideal as an accent metal. Copper does not react with water. Oxidation occurs after exposure to air.

Aluminum

Aluminum is an abundant natural metal. It is soft enough to make it easy to work with, yet it is naturally lightweight. This lightweight strength makes aluminum ideal for use in the construction of aircraft and transportation vehicles.

Aluminum is also a popular choice of metals for use in the food packaging industry. Aluminum drinking cans are a common sight in North American households.

Silver

Silver is often used in jewelry making. It is also has the greatest amount of electrical conductivity among metals. It is used as a form of currency in today’s society as well as during the past.

Silver has a diverse range of uses that includes medical use as a disinfectant and a catalyst for chemical reactions. Silver is harder than gold, yet is still very malleable.

Metallurgy extends into many different industrial and cultural applications. The study of different kinds of metals has long been of interest to humankind, dating back to the tales of wizards and knights in shining armor.
