How to Go About Choosing a Machine Shop for your Project

Whether you are a die-hard auto lover and spend endless hours making your car go faster, or a do it yourself home improvement aficionado, the odds are good before long you are going to be choosing a machine shop for your project.

This project could be small and easily fit in between other jobs the machinist is working on, or it might be sufficiently large to actually be the main project the shop will be working on for the next week.

Initially it may sound like a daunting task to begin choosing a machine shop for your project, but if you follow a simple three step rule, you simply cannot go wrong.

1. The first step in choosing a machine shop for your project is the creation of a budget and then asking a number of different shops to bid for the job. After all, the amount you are willing to pay and the amount of the actual materials cost plus labor might be more than you bargained for.

2. Next, visit the machine shop and take a look at the production. This is not the time to worry about cleanliness, but instead you are looking for a busy shop. A shop that lacks business is not a much sought after shop, and the old adage that you want to give a project to a busy person most certainly applies when it comes to machine shops.

3. Ask about specialization. Choosing a machine shop for your project is made easier when you find one shop that specializes in auto parts machining and associated tasks. This tips you off to a shop that has the tools necessary to finish your project in a timely manner.
