Solid Surface Fabrications and Tools

What are solid surface fabrications? The fabrications are synthetic surfaces made from any natural materials and substances, such as metal alloys or polymers. Solid surface fabrication generally involved a set of tasks for surface shaping. Countertop fabrication is one of the main types of solid surface fabrication.

The desirable characteristics of a solid surface fabrication need to be durable, such as resistant to heat, pressure, stains and scratches. Smoothness, warmth, translucence, color variation, shape or texture are all qualities looked for in a solid surface fabrication.

Laser Machining and Electron Beam Machining

Laser machining technology uses an intense beam of light from a laser of different widths for a variety of applications. Some applications done with a laser machine include cutting, slotting and creating holes.

This technology can be used to help fabricated many different types of materials. Some types of materials laser machining can be used in fabrication of are carbon fiber, composites, ceramics, glass, marble, metals, nylon, plastics, vinyl and thin metal foils.

Laser machining is used to produce a roughened surface on metals, ceramics and glass. This technology is also used for marking material surfaces. In this process a high intensity laser beam is passed through a stencil of a mirror and onto the area of the material being marked.

Standard Machining Tolerances

Machining is the use of power driven machine tools to shape metals and such materials. There are different categories of machining with some categories including boring, drilling, grinding, milling and turning. Advanced technology has been developed which uses chemicals, electricity, lasers and water. Different machines are used for the various categories.

For boring, the machining tool is used to enlarge an already existing hole. It is a fine finishing operation used in the final stages of manufacturing a product. Drilling is used to create the round holes. It uses a rotating tool which generally has two cutting edges. This tool is then fed into the material to create the hole.
